Monogrammed "A", dated and inscribed "Artist's proof XII" and "WLS - V". With the publisher's dry stamp lower right. - Evenly browned in the former mat opening. Light surface soiling in places. Good overall. Excellent and colorful impression of the image with margin. Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles (with the blindstamp). - Printed by KennethTyler with Jim Webb and Bernard Bleha at Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles. - In his series "White Line Squares" (often abbreviated as "WLS"), Josef Albers experimented with how a simple white line can change the viewer's perception of the colors surrounding it. Building on his iconic "Homage to the Square" designs, Albers' "White Line Squares" show four squares facing each other with a thin white line framing one of the squares. Between 1966 and 1967, Albers developed 17 color schemes for the print series, numbered from I to XVII, and produced them in collaboration with the prestigious Gemini G.E.L. print workshop in Los Angeles. Each color had to be applied separately and with incredible precision, as any mistake would destroy the visual effect of the perfect white line.
