ATRIBUIDO A MIGUEL CABRERA (Oaxaca, 1695- Ciudad de México, 1768) Adoración de los Pastores con ángel y rompimiento de gloria

Oil on copper, 41 x 31 cm. Inscribed in a phylactery: "GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO ET YN TERA PAX OMINI BONE". With frame in inlaid bone and palo santo. This copper, in good state of preservation, can undoubtedly be attributed to the painter Miguel Cabrera and can be related to other Adorations of the Shepherds by the same artist preserved in Mexico; one in the National Museum of the Viceroyalty in Tepotzotlán and another in the Regional Museum of Guadalupe in Zacatecas. Cabrera presents the moment of the Adoration of the Shepherds with a balanced composition. In the center, the Child Jesus rests on a humble manger, bathed in a divine radiance that captures our attention. At his side, the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, accompanied by the heavenly presence of an angel radiating serenity. At the top, a break of glory frames the main scene, where God the Father, the Dove of the Holy Spirit and glorious angels proclaim peace and heavenly glory with the phylactery that reads: "GLORY TO GOD IN THE HEIGHTS AND ON EARTH PEACE TO MEN OF GOOD WILL". On both sides, completing the scene, are the shepherds, along with the ox and the mule. In the foreground, rests a sleeping lamb, a motif that can be found in other works by Cabrera. Cabrera's mastery is evident in every detail of this work. The sweet expression of the faces of the characters, the vibrant coloring and the loose and expressive brushwork are distinctive features of this painter. We highlight the novohispanic frame of bone and palo santo inlay, characteristic of Campeche's productions, which frames and enhances the work.
