Manner of Rembrandt Portrait of an old woman, bust-length in profile, in a black woollen hat and white shawl oil on panel 55 x 45.5cm Condition Report: Overall: 79 x 68cm Light surface dirt. A fine vertical crack to the background in the centre of the top edge. Some further small cracks to the paint starting to emerge in in places. There is some retouching to the background and the sitter's hat. Some uneveness to the surface. Not examined under UV light, for a full report please contact the department.

Note: The present work is clearly influenced by atmospheric figure studies which are characteristic of Rembrandt's oeuvre, particularly in their dramatic contrast of light and shade, recalling, for example, the artist's 'Portrait of an Old Man' in the collection of the Fogg Museum [1930.191], and another painting of the same subject in the Louvre Museum [INV 1748].
