Circle of Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) Portrait of a lady, three-quarter-length seated, in a gold dress, her young daughter in a white dress, standing at her knee oil on canvas 127 x 102cm, in a carved giltwood Lely frame Condition Report: Overall: 147 x 123cm Relined. Craquelure. There is a T shaped repair to the background in the upper left quarter and some overpainting is visible in this area. Not examined under UV light, for a full report please contact the department.

After which at Appleby Castle, Cumbria. Note: The present work depicts James Scott (1649-1685), 1st Duke of Monmouth and 1st Duke of Buccleuch, who was the illegitimate son of King Charles II (1630-1685) and his first mistress, Lucy Walter (c.1630-1658). He is perhaps best known for leading the 'Monmouth Rebellion' in 1685 against his uncle, King James II (1633-1701), for which he was executed in the same year.
