14K Gold & Japanese Mixed Metal Shakudo Pendant Necklace

A pair of fine shakudo ornaments originally mounted in Victorian times as a pair of cuff buttons, and then re-imagined by our jeweler as an elegant split-chain pendant necklace. The two plaques feature a court lady and gentleman in Meiji-period costume. After the collapse of the feudal Samurai system in Imperial Japan, Europeans collected old sword and armor fittings such as these to set as jewelry. The mountings and chain are 14K. Origin: Japan, ca 1890. Condition: excellent, sharp detail and finish. Dimensions: each plaque, 15/16" x 13/32"; plaques together, 2" long; overall necklace length, 18-1/2”. Weight: 13.8 grams.
