ORAZIO FARINATI

(Verona, 1559 - 1616) PAUL FARINATI (Verona, 1524 - 1606) Madonna and Child with Saint John Oil on canvas, cm 83X75.5 Provenance: Turin, private collection A pupil of Nicola Giolfino according to Vasari, but certainly trained in his father's workshop, Paolo Farinati looked to the Raphaelism of Giulio Romano and then expressed a similarity of expression with the younger Paolo Veronese. The canvas under consideration, in fact, expresses a common pictorial sensibility, without forgetting the influence of Domenico Brusasorci, for the chromatic intonation of silvery luminosity. As for the intervention of his son Orazio, it is clear that this is a philological distinction that is difficult to settle, but inevitable for a correct presentation and reading of the work. His personality and catalog, in fact, are yet to be delineated and understood, but, in our case, the different conduction of the backdrop and the angels supporting the fabric behind the Virgin and the drafts, oblige us to reflect on his intervention. That said, one must take note of how a sixteenth-century workshop functioned and reiterate that Horace assisted his father, particularly for this kind of work intended for private patronage and domestic devotion. Having made these considerations and assessing the tenor of the work, it can therefore be assumed that it was executed between the eighth and ninth decades. We thank Giorgio Fossaluzza for the attribution on a photographic basis. Reference bibliography: Paolo Farinati, 1524 ; 1606, paintings, engravings and drawings for architecture, edited by G.
