Known for portraits and genre scenes, Horemans produced a large number of small anecdotal paintings executed in the tradition of 17th-century Flemish painters, becoming the leading chronicler of everyday life during the first half of the 18th century. The work is accompanied by critical entries by Raffaella Colace and Bert W. Meijer.

This drawing of a woman standing seen from behind by the Antwerp artist Jan Josef Horemans the Elder comes from the collection of A.F.C. Smet. The drawing is marked on the verso (SMET, A.F.C.). Jan Josef Horemans the Elder (1682-1759) was a Flemish painter of the 18th-century. Born in Antwerp, he is known for portraits, genre works, and historical allegories. He produced large number of small anecdotal pictures that were executed in the tradition of 17th-century Flemish genre painters. His colours were rather dark and he was later nicknamed 'le brun' and 'le sombre' to distinguish him from the work of his son who was nicknamed 'le clair' for his clearer palette. Dimensions: 7 5/8 x 3 3/4 in., (18.5 x 9.5 cm.) The drawing is perfect. A large crease along the top right corner. Bottom corners are folded. Paper is aged with signs of foxing and smudges. Image is marked on verso.
