HANS VON AACHEN (attr. A)

(Cologne, 1552 - Prague, 1615) The Holy Family and Angels Oil on copper, 23X18 cm Hans von Aachen trained in Cologne and worked many years in Italy, was court artist to Duke Wilhelm V, and in 1597 moved to Prague to the court of Rudolf II, who in 1604 elevated him to the rank of nobleman. The artist was also responsible for the royal collections and Praxiteles' famous classical torso. The painting under consideration finds comparison with the Holy Family and Angels belonging to the Glasgow Museums Resource Centre (See J. Jacoby, Hans van Aachen, 1552-1615, Munich, 2000) and to a pen and bistro drawing preserved in the Uffizi, traditionally attributed to Nicholas van der Heck.
