JAN MARTSZEN DE JONGE

(Haarlem, 1609-after 1647 or between 1647 and 1667) Battle scene Oil on panel, 14.5X20 cm Provenance: Amsterdam, Christie's, November 13, 1990, lot 142 (as Jan Martszen the Younger) Private collection The painting under consideration is attributed to a Nordic artist, from the Flemish area and identified as Jan Martszen de Jonge. In this regard, compare the panel with the one sold at auction at Sotheby's in London on July 9, 1998, lot 137, or with the one preserved in Rotterdam at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (inv. no. 1494). Maarten de Jonge, nephew and pupil of Isaiah van de Velde (1587 ; 1630), owes his critical and commercial fortune to the many battle scenes he produced. Among the best and most representative are the canvases in the Sydervelt Collection (Amsterdam, 1766) and The Portrait of Frederick Henry of Orange on Horseback at the Siege of the City of Grol, rendered in vigorous detail with the collaboration of Michiel van Mierevelt. Another noteworthy work of his is The Battle of Lützen. The work is accompanied by a critical file by Raffaella Colace. Reference bibliography: G.
