Günther DOMENIG (1934-2012), graduated in 1959, and Eilfried HUTH (1930): Projekt Floraskin (1971). Grundriss Wohnheiten. Print on paper. 24 x 32 cm Framed under glass. Folds. The felt-tip drawing is in the collections of the Frac Centre Val de loire in Orléans. Eilfried Huth and Günther Domenig were leading exponents of the radical Austrian architecture that emerged in the early 1960s, creating a rich and original body of work that marked a fundamental break with prevailing functionalism. Their experimental projects mark a decisive shift from fixed objects to evolving environments. Their first projects, like those of Coop Himmelb(l)au and Haus-Rucker-Co, explored the potential of inflatables (Trigon, 1967). They went on to design several pioneering projects, from the megastructure Stadt Ragnitz (1969) to "green architecture" (Floraskin, 1971). The architects referred to the most avant-garde information theories of the time, including cybernetics: often taking the form of megastructures, their architecture was conceived as a multitude of interactions between different levels of organization, exchanging information within a global system. Medium Total (1969-70), a veritable living organism, was one such expression. Their biomorphic aesthetic, which borrows its representation of flows from medical imaging, revives the communicational aspect of physiology and heralds to some extent the research of computational architecture. About Floraskin : In 1971, a Moroccan consulting firm commissioned a vast project for a tourist complex in the Ifni region of Morocco. Bringing together artists and architects as well as sociologists, psychologists, scientists and "cyberneticians", the project was intended as a revolutionary alternative to tourism in the age of mass consumption. Hermann R. Grub's concept of "Vacation = Rest + Experience" was to guide all thinking. Huth and Domenig were commissioned to design a hotel complex with 30,000 beds and an airport. Floraskin, literally "plant skin", is the culmination of an infinitely adaptable and expandable building system that combines the technological principle of the megastructure with the natural principle of organic growth. The project is composed of two structures: the primary one is made of prefabricated elements (bars and cables) arranged in a star shape, resulting in a hexagonal system; the secondary one is a plant membrane composed of humus pollen and irrigated plantations. It envelops the primary structure using a "spray-coat" process and provides air conditioning. The basic infrastructure and the hotel rooms ("cocoons"), space cells made of reinforced plastics, connect to the primary structure like clusters. In addition to these infrastructures, sensory devices were to be created to heighten the level of experience: air cushions imagined by Christo, "biokinetic" plantations by HA Schult or an "oasis" (Psy-Point) proposed by Haus-Rucker-Co. Jeeps equipped with radio transmitters were to be made available to holidaymakers for their leisure activities, enabling them to communicate constantly with the central station and "participate" in the adventures of other tourists.
