Engraving; 460x610 mm. Margins. Original Outline Coloring. Some small stains. Good copy. Rare engraving from 1831 depicting in detail the now declining Ottoman Empire. The map depicts Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Arabia, Tartary and parts of India, China, Russia, Europe and Africa.The map was engraved by A. J. Lallemand as a plate for the first edition of the 'Atlas Universel de Geographie' by Pierre Lapie, a French cartographer and engraver active in the first half of the 19th century.

The real translator of the work was Francesco Fuoco, (not De Welz as written on the title page), whose aim was to provide Sicily with modern infrastructure that would help its economic development. Two parts in one vol, woodcut vignette to title page depicting a steam wagon in operation in Yorkshire, 5 engraved plates folded several times, including a topographical map of the Simplon road and a map of Sicily, probable autograph signature of De Melz on verso of title-page to prevent counterfeit, (sporadic worming to upper margin of first half of volume, some affecting text, tear to blank upper margin of pp. 287, first leaf detached, restoration to first plate, some wear). Contemporary half-calf binding with printed title, spine gilt (spine detached, some wear). (1)
