PHILIP II: (1527-1598) King of Spain 1556-98. During his marriage to Queen Mary I of England, he was King of England and Ireland 1554-58. Rare L.S., ` Yo El Rey´, as King, one page, oblong folio, Madrid, 1st of August 1563, to infantry Captain Gil Hernandez, in old Castilian-Spanish. The document being a grant given by the King to Gil Hernandez, granting new salaries and rights because of his services to the Kingdom defending its territories, stating in part ` …a nuestros Contadores Mayores, sabed que acatando lo que Gil Hernandez nos ha servido…en la defensa de Mazalquivir, teniendola cercada el Rey de Argelia por mar y tierra…´ (Translation: `.. to our Senior Treasurerss, be informed that abiding what Gil Hernandez has served us... in the defense of Mazalquivir, being besieged by land and sea by the King of Algeria…´) Countersigned at the base, with additional annotation and countersignatures to the verso. Large water stain to the base and right border, not affecting the signature. Edges trimmed, mostly the right and lower edges, with small area of paper loss to the right bottom corner.
