EUGENIE DE MONTIJO: (1826-1920)

EUGENIE DE MONTIJO: (1826-1920) Empress consort of the French 1853-70 as the wife of Emperor Napoleon III. A.L.S., Eugenie, four pages, 8vo, Camden Place, Chislehurst, 22nd February 1873, to [Monsieur Ray], on black bordered mourning stationery, in French. I thank you for having shown me once again your devotion at a time when I can find no consolation other than in the memories and regrets that join with mine in finding again beyond death the one I have lost! I know that friends deprived today of his presence and of his advice, deprived of the support of his great heart and of that upright and elegant mind which knew so well how to enlighten us in the midst of obscurity and of the march of events, are replaying in their memories the memory of a life so full and a destiny so great and so full of lessons. May we never forget them and remain faithful to the wisdom that inspired and measured everything in his life. If I speak to you of him in this way, it is because I know how attached you were to him, and you must understand today the inconsolable grief I feel. I thank you for passing on to my son the devotion that his father inspired in you´). VG Napoleon III (1808-1873) Emperor of the French 1852-70 who also served as the first President of France 1848-52.
