LOUIS XIV: (1638-1715) Also known as Louis the Great or The Sun King. King of France 1643-1715. Son of Louis XIII. His reign of more than 72 years is the longest recorded of any monarch in European history. A rare and excellent Document Signed, ` Louis´, one page, vellum, oblong 18 x 10 (45cm x 25.5), Versailles, 3rd March 1711, to Captain Coutanciere, in French. The letter bears to the heading the title "Louis par la grâce de Dieu Roi de France et de Navarre" ("Louis by the Grace of God King of France and Navarre") and is the appointment of Captain Coutanciere to the bombardier regiment, stating in part ` La compagnie qu’avait le capitaine Chauvance dans notre régiment des bombardiers étant à présent vacante par son changement à une autre compagnie et désirant la remplir d’une personne qui s’en puisse bien acquitter, nous avons estimé que nous ne pouvions faire pour cette fois un meilleur choix que de vous pour les services que vous nous avez rendus dans toutes les occasions qui s’en sont présentées ou vous avez donné des preuves de votre valeur, courage, expérience en la guerre, vigilance et bonne conduite, et de votre fidélité et affection à notre service...´ (Translation: " The company that Captain Chauvance had in our bombardier regiment being now vacant by his change to another company and wishing to fill it with a person who could do it well, we felt that we could not do for this times a better choice than you for the services you have rendered us on all the occasions that have arisen or you have given proof of your valor, courage, experience in war, vigilance and good conduct, and of your loyalty and affection to our service...")
