DIDEROT DENIS: (1713-1784)

DIDEROT DENIS: (1713-1784) French philosopher, art critic and writer, a significant figure during the Age of Enlightenment. An extremely rare A.L.S., Diderot, one page, small 4to, n.p., n.d., seemingly a retained draft of a letter to Joseph de La Porte, in French. The head of the letter is annotated by Diderot 'Modele de la lettre a M. L'abbe de la Porte' (Translation: 'Sample letter to M. L'abbe de la Porte') and his text states, in full, 'Des personnes mal informees, Monsieur, ayant repondu que la traduction imprimee du pere de famille de Goldoni etais faite par M. de Lavie et celle du veritable ami Veron de Foubonnais; La connaissance que j'ai eue de ces deux traductions m'oblige de declarer que celles qui paraissent sont tres differentes, et j'eu constate que ni l'un ni l'autre n'ont eu part a l'edition de ces ouvrages' (Translation: 'Some ill-informed people, Sir, having replied that the printed translation of Goldoni's pere de famille was by M. de Lavie and that of the true friend Veron de Foubonnais; The knowledge I have had of these two translations obliges me to declare that those which appear are very different, and I have noted that neither of them had any part in the publication of these works'). A letter with interesting associations. One very small, minor tear to the left edge. VG Joseph de La Porte (1714-1779) French priest, literary critic, poet and playwright. Carlo Goldoni (1707-1793) Italian playwright and librettist, a profuse author whose works included the comedy Il padre di famiglia ('The Father of the Family'). Francois Veron Duverger de Forbonnais (1722-1800) ?????? Charles de Lavie (1694-1775) President of the First Chamber of Inquiries of the Bordeaux Parliament. ??????

[DIDEROT (Denis)]: Les Bijoux des Dames, indiscrets. Ou Avantures & anecdotes particulières du Royaume du Congo. Pekin, s.n., 1756. Three parts bound in one volume. Bound with: NOCRION, conte Allobroge. 7.5 by 13.8 cm. (4)-162-(2); (2)-209-(2); 201-(2) pages. Followed by 36 pages. Contemporary full marbled basane, 5-rib ornate spine, red title page, roulette on edges. Two 3.5 cm cracks on the spines, without affecting the solidity of the work. Some freckling, and a few pages with pale marginal wetness. Nocrion has browned paper. Otherwise a good copy. Les Bijoux indiscrets is a libertine novel published anonymously by Denis Diderot in 1748. The edition was clandestine, with no publisher's name, but it was published by the bookseller Laurent Durand. Our copy is from the second edition, published with a slightly different title. A rare book... This allegory, Diderot's first work of fiction, depicts Louis XV as Sultan Mangogul of the Congo, who receives from the genie Cucufa a magic ring that possesses the power to make women's vulvas ("jewels") speak. While most of the novel focuses on the different types of ladies of the Court and of the world, whether prudish or coquettish, English or Turkish, there is also room for debates on the ideas at work in French society at the time: praise for Voltaire, the history of mathematics, the fate of the Jansenists, and more. DIDEROT appears in this text combining humor and philosophy... Nocrion is a tale attributed to Thomas-Simon GUEULETTE. It is an erotic tale, the 1st edition of which appeared in 1747. Probably a forgery. No title page (if there was one...).
