GUS (1911-1997) Gustave Erlich. French cartoonist, illustrator and caricaturist. Small selection of seven original pen, ink and blue pencil cartoons drawn and signed ( 'Gus') by Gus, each one page, mainly oblong folio, n.p., n.d. (1960s). Each of the single panel cartoons are dedicated to the theme of espionage and depict various military officers in the company of beautiful seductresses, all with captions to the base including ´Ici X22. Notez vite, chef! 1 galon: sous-lieutenant, 2 galons: lieutenant, 3 galons: capitaine´ (Translation: ´This is X22. Make a note of it quickly, boss! 1 stripe: second lieutenant, 2 stripes: lieutenant, 3 stripes: captain´), ´Vilein! je ne vous cache rien, moi´ (Translation: ´Vilein! I'm not hiding anything from you´), ´Alors, colonel cheri, on cache a son petit pigeon bleu le secret de la goupille de detonateur?´ (Translation: ´So, colonel dear, are you keeping the secret of the detonator pin from your little blue pigeon?), ´Si vous etes gentille avec moi, j´lessaierai de passes caporal, histoire de connaitre des tas de secrets militaires´ (Translation: ´If you're nice to me, I'll try to become a corporal, so I can learn all sorts of military secrets´) etc. Each with various pencil and ink annotations and stamps etc., to the rectos and versos, relating to their publication, including in the French weekly magazine Ici Paris. Some light age wear and minor faults, generally G to about VG, 7
