SARGENT JOHN SINGER: (1856-1925)

SARGENT JOHN SINGER: (1856-1925) American artist, considered the leading portrait painter of his generation. A.L.S., John S. Sargent, to two sides of his correspondence card, Tite Street, Chelsea, n.d. ( 'Sunday'), to [Francis] Derwent Wood. Sargent states that he is delighted to have the opportunity, and confirms that he has written to Sir Frank Swettenham, remarking 'I hope you will get him, he is awfully picturesque and a delightful fellow'. Some damp staining, particularly evident to the verso, slightly affecting the text and signature. About G Francis Derwent Wood (1871-1926) British sculptor. Frank Swettenham (1850-1946) British colonial administrator who served as the first Resident-General of the Federated Malay States 1896-1901. Swettenham was also an amateur painter, photographer and antique collector. Sargent painted his portrait in 1904, having been commissioned by the Straits Association, and the original is now housed in the National Museum in Singapore. A second version was created by Sargent and is within the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London.
