MUCHA Alphonse,( 1860- 1939) attributed to. The Virgin, the Child Jesus and Saint John the Baptist. Circa 1880. Tempera. 108 x 160 cm. Blackened, traces of folds and wetness. Signed lower right, in the paste. Provenance: Collection Vienne, Austria. Collection Périgord, France. Our painting is a reworking of the famous painting by ADOLPHE-WILLIAM BOUGUEREAU (1825-1905), entitled "La vierge, l'Enfant Jésus et Saint Jean-Baptiste". Bouguereau's painting is one of his most famous. It was exhibited at the 1875 Salon and later in numerous galleries. It was also reproduced in the Salon catalog, thanks to a precise drawing by M. Lavée and an identical engraving by M. Robert (Rf 01, enclosed). The painting has become very well known, and copies from the period can sometimes be found, probably commissioned by enthusiasts in love with the painting: -We can cite that of the painter H. Ballheim (act. c.1850-c.1880), Austrian ( Rf 02, enclosed) -A Limoges porcelain plate painted by Th. Algrain, "d'après Bouguereau", dated 1875 (Rf 03, enclosed)In 1889, the painting was exhibited at the Paris World's Fair. It should be noted that the models for the painting were Bouguereau's wife and children. On May 26, 1993, the painting was sold by Sotheby's, New York, for €524,043, hammer price. Our attribution to Mucha, in addition to the mention in the lower right-hand corner, is justified by differences with Bouguereau's painting, the most notable of which is the addition of a frieze that is characteristic of the work of the great master of Art Nouveau. Mucha emigrated to Vienna in 1879. He worked for the city's largest theater design firm, Kautsky-Brioschi-Burghardt, before joining Egon Khuen-Belasi, brother of Count Karl, to decorate Gandegg Castle. This painting, executed in tempera, is characteristic of woodwork paintings, as confirmed by the absence of the tension bands, which have probably remained embedded in the woodwork. This combination of elements (dates, technique, provenance) suggests that this work was commissioned by Mucha for a decor or paneled room based on Bouguereau's painting.
