FRANCESC SERRA CASTELLET (Barcelona, 1912 - Tossa, Girona, 1976). "Female nude". Oil on tablex. Presents sketch on the back. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 60 x 83 cm; 74 x 97 cm (frame). Painter and draftsman, Francesc Serra spent his youth in Granollers, Barcelona. Although he passed fleetingly through the School of La Lonja in Barcelona, he is basically a self-taught author. He had his first exhibition in 1932, at the Sala Parés in Barcelona, and participated in the Salones de Primavera between 1934 and 1936. In 1936 and 1937 he was a special guest of the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh, United States. He continued to hold individual exhibitions in Barcelona, mainly at the Sala Gaspar. A great admirer of Degas, he was especially influenced by his favorite theme, the feminine. Sporadically he also tackled other themes, such as the urban landscape, of which the series of Paris, presented in 1951, is worth mentioning. Likewise, with his portraits of the lead mine he approached the sensitive realism of Ingres. He won several awards, including the Sant Jordi of Barcelona (1953) and the first medals at the National Exhibitions of Madrid (1957) and Barcelona (1960). He collected several unpublished drawings under the title "Dibujos de Serra" (1973), with a prologue by Santos Torroella. Determined defender of realism in art and of traditional figuration against the avant-garde, he published the essay "La aventura del arte contemporáneo" (1953), with a prologue by Rafael Benet. He is represented in the Museums of Modern Art of Madrid and Barcelona and in the Museums of Fine Arts of l'Empordà and Sabadell.

MANUEL COLMEIRO GUIMARÁS (Pontevedra, 1901 - Salvaterra do Minho, Pontevedra, 1999). "Spanish woman". 1949. Ink on paper. Signed and dated. Catalogued in "Drawings by Colmeiro". "Cuadernos de arte. Contemporary Masters of Drawing and Painting Collection", nº 8. By Rodríguez Sahagún Measurements: 55 x 43 cm; 80 x 69 cm (frame). In this drawing of costumbrista theme, Colmeiro extracts with firm stroke the essential of the Andalusian attire, like the comb and the mantilla. Large melancholy eyes illuminate the sharp oval face. A Galician painter who emigrated to Buenos Aires, Manuel Colmeiro combined his artistic studies there at night with work in a shoe factory. For a year he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, but he left to form a working group with other painters and sculptors. After this stage, where he developed an expressionist work, he returned to Galicia in 1926. Two years later he held his first exhibition in the salons of Faro de Vigo, and soon obtained a scholarship from the Diputación de Pontevedra to travel to Madrid and further his training at the Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. In the capital, Manuel Colmeiro showed, however, a greater interest in studying first-hand the great masters at the Prado Museum. He continued to make himself known, and in 1932 he took part in an exhibition of new Galician painters at Federico García Lorca's Barraca. However, when the civil war broke out, he went back to Buenos Aires, where he remained until 1948. During this second period in Argentina he will be in contact with Luis Seoane, Rafael Dieste and Rafael Alberti, among others. In 1949 he moved to Paris, where he remained for decades, until 1989, when he returned definitively to Galicia. In fact, Colmeiro is considered part of the Spanish School of Paris. In the 1960s he achieved massive international recognition, with solo exhibitions in London, Paris and Madrid. During these years his work is already focused on popular Galician themes, its culture and its people. He was part of the group known as "Os Novos" or "Os Renovadores", together with Seoane, Laxeiro, Arturo Souto and Maside. All of them, born at the beginning of the 20th century, were considered continuators of the "Nós Generation", and had in common a work with Galician themes combined with avant-garde aesthetics, mainly expressionism, cubism and abstraction. Among them, Colmeiro stood out for the intimate air of his images, accompanied by a lyrical concept of atmospheres, and in fact he was considered the most attached to the tradition of the group. Throughout his career, this artist was awarded several prizes, including the Prêmio das Artes de la Junta de Galicia in 1987 and the Prêmio Celanova, Casa dos Poetas in 1996. He is currently represented in the Afundación Collection, the María José Jove Foundation, the Abanca Collection and the Museum of Pontevedra, among other collections.

JOSEP MARIA TAMBURINI DALMAU (Barcelona, 1856 - 1932). "Jesus infant", 1907. Oil on canvas. Signed in the upper right corner. Work published in "J.M. Tamburini", Jaume Soler. Caixa de Catalunya Foundation, 1989. Reproduced on page 75. Measurements: 125 x 182 cm; 130 x 187 cm (frame). Painter and art critic, and outstanding figure of the Catalan modernism, Tamburini initiated his formation in the School of La Lonja of Barcelona, to later complete his studies in Paris, with L. Bonnat, and Rome. He collaborated as a cartoonist, art critic and poet with the magazine "L'Avenç", one of the most outstanding artistic publications of Catalonia at the turn of the century. He also wrote for "La Vanguardia". As a painter, he began his career in history painting and anecdotal realism, to later evolve along the lines of symbolism, strongly influenced by English pre-Raphaelism. Recognition came in 1888, when he won a silver medal at the Universal Exposition in Barcelona. He continued to participate in official exhibitions in Barcelona and Madrid, and was again awarded at the Barcelona Exhibition in 1898, where he received the Queen Regent's Extraordinary Prize. In 1911 he received the Prize of the King and Queen of Spain. Already as a mature painter, he worked on placidly fantastic, detailed and precious themes, as well as religious themes and some portraits. He was also a member of the Board of Museums of Barcelona, advisor to the Academy of Fine Arts, professor at the School of La Lonja and co-founder of the Artistic and Literary Society of Catalonia (1911). He is represented in the MACBA, the National Museum of Art and the Library of Catalonia, the Royal Academy of Sant Jordi, the Casa Lis Museum in Salamanca and the Fine Arts Museums of Valencia and Seville, as well as in numerous private collections.
