Description

Philippe Magaudoux, known as Mohlitz (Saint-André-de-Cubzac, 1941 - Bordeaux, 2019) La visite au stylite, 2004 Pen and ink signed, titled and dated lower right 27.8 x 20.5 cm Provenance: Artist's studio, 2019 This drawing is a draft for an unfinished engraving. A more sketched version was presented at our January 2024 Bordeaux sale. The hermits were early Christian hermits who lived at the top of a column without ever coming down, nourished by a few gifts, in order to practice extreme asceticism. Mohlitz treats the subject with his customary irony. His stylite seems like a beatnik who has set up a straw hut at the top of a Corinthian column, complete with small furniture, a painting and a litter of wine. And we'll let the curious observe with a magnifying glass how the holy man rewards the zealous woman who comes to bring him an offering
