Description

Philippe Magaudoux, known as Mohlitz (Saint-André-de-Cubzac, 1941 - Bordeaux, 2019) Les Congés payés, 1985 Pencil, pen and Indian ink drawing, heightened with gray wash, signed, titled and dated 1985 lower right 30 x 21 cm Mohlitz would precede his etchings with pen-and-ink drawings that served as models, just as elaborate as the final plates. But he would throw his ideas onto a sheet of paper and quickly sketch out his compositions before indulging in this painstaking preparatory work. Few of these drafts seem to have survived, the artist preferring his finished drawings, which he jealously guarded. A fine example of first thought, our sheet testifies to a vertiginous mastery of perspective, suggesting the clearly separated planes descending by degrees towards the precipice.
