RAMÓN PUYOL ROMÁN (Algeciras, 1907-1981). Figures, 1925. Six drawings in a single frame. Watercolor on paper. Signed in the central part. Measurements: 41 x 28 cm.(passpartout); 55 x 42 cm.(frame). Ramón Puyol Román was a Spanish painter and scenographer. He was the author of the poster for the Republican side that contained the phrase "No pasarán", that Dolores Ibárruri had pronounced in one of her famous speeches at the beginning of the Civil War. As a young man he traveled to Madrid where he entered the San Fernando School of Fine Arts, where he met the most important artists of his time (Lorca, Alberti), lived and worked in Paris, Moscow and Rome. He worked on the scenographies of several important plays such as La Chinche, by Vladimir Maiakovski. He made numerous illustrations for all kinds of literary works and collaborated with the communist press (Mundo Obrero, Frente Rojo...). In 1933 he won the gold medal at the National Exhibition of Painting. In 1937 he painted the mural of the Second Spanish Republic at the International Exhibition in Paris, he also took to Paris numerous lithographs used in the Republican propaganda and outstanding posters of the Republican side during the Spanish Civil War. At the end of the war he was imprisoned and after two death sentences that were not carried out, he was sentenced to hard labor in the restoration of frescoes in El Escorial and the Royal Palace of Madrid; when he was released he had to subsist painting doors until he again got a job in the magazine La Móvil.
