AN ARAB SILVER-MOUNTED SHAMSHIR, 19TH CENTURY, PROBABLY SYRIA with broad slightly curved blade double-edged towards the point, formed with three long fullers and incised with a brief inscription on each face, engraved silver hilt, comprising a pair of straight quillons with bud-shaped finials, langets, integral grip rising to a right-angular pommel, engraved over its surface with foliage and flowers, with traces of red pigment, and the pommel with a small crescentic pendent, in its wooden scabbard encased in silver, embossed with flowers and foliage and with two middle bands with rings for suspension, each decorated en suite with the hilt 83.5 cm blade

Shamshir sword, Yemen and Iran, 18th/19th century Probably Persian blade saber, curved shape with one cutting edge and three lateral gutters, in damascus steel inlaid with gold on the upper part, cartouches engraved with medallions containing a lion and an inscription on one side, and the Arabic invocation "Ma Sha' Allah, Lâ Hawla wa la Qûwwata Illa Billah" (literally "God has willed it, there is no strength and power except in God") on the other. The engraved metal guard with straight quillons finished with buttons, the bent-cap fuse covered with alternating plates of studded horn and engraved metal. Length: 90.5 cm Some metal fittings missing on the grip, scabbard and spindle chain missing, some traces of oxidation. TURKEY, mid-19th century Ottoman SABRE known as Shamshir, handle with two horn plates, brass mounting, guard with two straight quillons terminated by auricles, curved blade with flat back decorated with gilded calligraphic gilded calligraphy of Islamic inscriptions, low-title silver scabbard with two rings decorated with plant motifs. Good condition; old scabbard restoration. Provenance: descendants of General Changarnier (1793-1877).
