‡ A JAPANESE TSUBA (HAND GUARD) OF MARU GATA (ROUND FORM), LATE 17TH/EARLY 18TH CENTURY of shakudō (copper/gold alloy) with a hammered ground of fine nanako (fish-roe) points, decorated with an applied scene of a deer in autumnal grasses and baying at the moon as it appears behind clouds; the deer in copper, the moon in gold and the autumn grasses in gold and silver, the verso with applied autumnal grasses in gold and silver, signed Goto Mitsutoshi and kao (art signature) Goto Mitsutoshi was the 11 th of the Seijo line of main school Goto makers; many sources argue that the correct reading of his name is Mitsunobu.
