MURPHY AUDIE: (1925-1971)

MURPHY AUDIE: (1925-1971) American soldier and film actor, the most decorated American combat soldier of World War II. An unusual D.S., Audie Murphy, one page, small 4to, n.p., 1st February 1971, on the printed stationery of W. C. Knox & Associates. The typed document takes the form of a letter addressed to Murphy and states, in full, ´Regarding our conversation of Friday last pertaining to the use of your name on a new product. It was understood that your permission was granted to use your name in whole or part on a product known as a Flying Peace Symbol and any of its related advertisement material. It was also agreed that it would be done with taste and discretion preventing any undue personal displeasure to yourself. Should you still agree to this sponsorship request, please indicate such by placing your signature below´. Murphy has signed his name in blue ink at the foot of the document indicating his approval of the contents. VG Research indicates that Murphy endorsed a Flying Peace Symbol constructable ´toy´ that was based on Gerald Holtom´s design of the peace symbol, originally the logo adopted by the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. The present document, somewhat poignantly given its content, was signed by Murphy just four months before he was killed in an aeroplane crash.
