GOMES ANTONIO CARLOS: (1836-1896) Brazilian composer, a contemporary of Verdi and Puccini and the first New World composer whose work was accepted by Europe. Gomes was the only non-European who was successful as an opera composer in Italy during the ´golden age of opera´. A.L.S., A Carlos Gomes, to the recto and verso of his personal printed oblong 12mo Visiting Card, featuring his printed name to the centre, n.p., n.d., to an unidentified writer, in Italian. Gomes writes ´I have received the precious gift of your beautiful poems and I thank you warmly. I hope, at some happy time in the future, to be able to put a few of their verses to music´.
