Twenty-five issues, format 15.5 x 24 cm, of 32 pp. Paper covers, the first illustrated with a large color composition by Gino Starace. Complete collection of this grandguignolesque series devoted to the adventures of one of the members of the Bezon family, a famous family of tamers and menagerie directors from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. Lots of blood, lots of beasts, some horrible natives, torrents of implausibility, all collected in fascicles under spectacular covers by the great Starace, who embellished the texts with black compositions. According to the SUDOC, the text was written by Oscar Ménétrier (founder of the Grand-Guignol theater) and Fabrice Delphi. Folders rubbed, but in good condition.

Shagreened calf, ornate smooth spine, brown morocco title-pieces (modern binding). First French edition of this important voyage by Aubry de La Mottraye, illustrated with a vignette on the titles, a repeated frontispiece, 4 maps and 47 engraved plates hors texte: views, costumes, plans, medals. Bibliographers emphasize the beauty of the iconography by William Hogarth, one of the most famous English artists of the 18th century (Chadenat 105, Blackmer 946). Aubry de la Motraye (1674-1743). A well-born French Protestant, he moved to England as a young man and decided to travel at the age of 22. He embarked in 1696 for 26 years of adventure and discovery. His travels took him to Europe, Asia and Africa. From 1696 to 1729, Aubry de La Mottraye traveled through Tartary, Turkey, parts of Asia and Africa, and the northern countries, starting with Scandinavia, where he became the confidant of Charles XII. A very fine copy in a modern imitation binding.

Toulouse-born Marius Cazenave (1839-1913) (who calls himself "physician and intimate adviser to the Queen of Madagascar Ranavalo Manjaka" in the title of this edition) was a world-famous magician, science enthusiast and adventurer. He arrived in Madagascar in 1886 with the unstated aim of promoting French interests against the British. He managed to become an intimate of Queen Ranavalona III and, using unusual methods that often involved prestidigitation, obtained the cancellation of an important treaty between Great Britain and Madagascar.
