SOULÈS (François): Histoire des troubles de l'Amérique anglaise, written on the most authentic Memoirs. Paris, Buisson, 1787. 4 volumes. 13 by 19.5 cm. (8)-379-(3); (4)-365; (4)-420; (4)-272-43 pages and three large folding maps. Complete. Contemporary full ochre basane, ornate smooth spine, black title-pieces. Binding with minor flaws (upper headpieces a little worn, two small wormholes, a 2 cm split on one jaw, a small epidermis on one board. Despite all this, a very decent copy (see photos). Interior with a few scattered freckles, darkened title leaves. Only one more important defect: a worm gallery in the margin of volume 3, more substantial on the last 30 leaves, but without any lack of text. The first two maps are on blued paper, with color indications. They are in very good condition. First edition. A history of the American War of Independence from the stamp tax affair of 1765 to the Treaty of Versailles in 1783. The author shows himself to be a supporter of the principles on which the American Revolution was founded, but he also undertakes the work of a true historian, gathering first-hand information from both handwritten memoirs and direct testimony from French, English and American actors. Thomas JEFFERSON, to whom Soulès had submitted his manuscript, declared the work excellent. A documented and contemporary vision of the American War of Independence.
