Piece de jeu d'échecs, le fou

A carved ivory chess piece (bishop) in elephant shape, India, 17th-18th century Small ivory elephant (al-fil) surmounted by a crenellated rectangular palanquin, decorated with small holes arranged horizontally. A string of pearls adorns the neck and surrounds the rump. A small hole and slot on the right front foot and a small hole under the left rear foot fixed the animal to a base that no longer exists. 5 x 5 cm. 52 gr. This massive piece, similar in size to the pieces kept in Brooklyn and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was carved from a thick and precious part of the tusk, indicating the high rank of the patron. Please note that this lot contains elephant ivory and is accompanied by its intracommunity certificate n°FR24075012-K. In accordance with European regulation 2021/2280 of December 16, 2021, the export of goods containing this material outside the EU is prohibited.
