A genealogy of the Prophet Muhammad, Central Asia, dated Saturday 29 Jumada II AH 697/ 13 April 1298 AD. Probably Central Asia, dated Hegira 697 (=1298) Handwritten scroll, acephalous, on thick beige paper, in Persian, calligraphed in "naskh" in brown ink on four lines, followed by the colophon on five lines in red ink: Saturday 29 Jumada II 697H. (=April 13, 1298). A few words in Persian. The scroll traces the Prophet's genealogy from 'Adnan to Ghâlib, son of Fihr, founder of the Quraysh tribe. 305 x 28 cm This scroll traces the genealogy of the Prophet from 'Adnan to Ghâlib, son of Fihr, founder of the Quraysh tribe, through 11 generations (the beginning is missing). It emphasis on the second branch of the tribe descended from 'Adnan. Thus the name of Rabi'a al-faras b. Nizar is placed in the centre of the scroll. The science of the genealogy of the Prophet "Ulm al-Nasab" was of great importance from the very beginnings of Islam. It links the Prophet Muhammad to Abraham and other biblical patriarchs such as Noah and Adam, through the lineage of Ismail, who lived in Mecca and married a member of the tribe of Jurhum. The family tree of the Prophet is traced back 22 generations to 'Adnan, who lived some 630 years before Muhammad. Provenance : Private collection from the Persian Gulf since the 1990s.
