Description

AVRIL (Jeanne Beaudon, known as Jane). Autograph letter signed [to writer Léon-Paul Fargue]. [Paris], "August 7". 2 pp. folio. "As I read the 1st chapter of your report on the lovely old days - still regretted by the few survivors who lived through them - I see, not without surprise, that you mix my slim person in a fanciful way with facts that your imagination makes almost plausible. [She says she doesn't mind, but is concerned about future chapters and asks that the name of her late husband's family not be mentioned]... I don't know if you've had time to savor the sweetness of life at the end of the last century before 1900 - exactly from 90 to 1900. What charm, grace, delicacy and carefreeness created its adorable atmosphere, which seems to me to have disappeared forever! I WAS ABOVE ALL A FRIEND OF POETS AND LITTERATEURS (NOT OF GRAND-DUCS), AND IT'S THE CHAT-NOIR THAT I REMEMBER MOST VIVIDLY. FOR ME, DANCE RESUMED MY WHOLE LIFE. The quadrille was an accessory, and I evolved separately without sharing the company of the Goulues or Rayon-d'or of the time [famous Moulin-Rouge dancers]. To the "draperies" and improvements of modern life, so brutal, so shameless and so muffled, I still prefer my charming memories of those days. They have left their incomparable poetry in my heart, and are the only dear companions of my old age as well as a great consolation..." ATTACHED, about 20 letters, mainly from personalities from the entertainment world: André ANTOINE, Jeanne ARNOULD-PLESSY, Wanda von BOGDANI, Constant Coquelin dit COQUELIN AINE, Ernest Coquelin dit COQUELIN CADET, Félix GALIPAUX, Jeanne GRANIER, Antony MARS, Jacques MONOD, Philoclès REGNIER, Gabrielle Réju dite REJANE, Jean PAULHAN, Charles-Marie LECONTE DE LISLE, etc.
