FLAUBERT (Gustave). Autograph letter signed [to Jeanne de Tourbey]. [Paris, ca. February 20, 1872]. One p. in-8, small ink stain. "My dear beautiful friend, you will think of my protégé, won't you. His name is Jules Rohaut and he has written in small newspapers under the name Jules Dementhe. Recommend him to your friends, the great journalists. He's a witty boy - who can be of service. He knows the store. HOW GOOD YOUR DINNER WAS YESTERDAY! HOW PRETTY YOU WERE! WHAT A GREAT EVENING! HOW I LOVE YOU! Mille tendresses de votre Gve Flaubert " FLAUBERT AND "LA TOURBEY". Born into poverty in Reims, Marie-Anne Detourbay (1837-1903) came to Paris, where she became famous under the name of Jeanne de Tourbey, and had an influential salon during the Second Empire and early Third Republic. Named "la Tourbey" by the Goncourts, she was entertained by rich and famous lovers, including Alexandre Dumas fils, who called her "la dame aux violettes", the pressman Émile de Girardin, Prince Napoléon, the Turkish diplomat and collector Khalil-Bey (for whom she is said to be the model for Courbet's painting L'Origine du monde, commissioned by Khalil Bey), Ernest Baroche (who bequeathed his fortune to her), and Count Edgar de Loynes (who married her in 1873). Gustave Flaubert, who came into her favor in 1857, frequented her salon and wrote her tender, playful letters until his death. FRANCE (Anatole). See n° 56 above.
