Description

BRETON (André). Autograph card signed "André B." to Pierre Mabille. Poitiers, [January 18, 1940, according to postmark]. One p. in-12 oblong in green ink; autograph note signed: "Médecin aux[iliaire] A. Breton, Ecole de pilotage élémentaire, Poitiers (Vienne)". "My dear Pierre, do you know this [Emmanuel] Aegerter, author of a recently published book on LES HERESIES [DU] MOYEN ÂGE and moreover of works on Saint-Just, Lenin and Freudian poems. It interests me. This little book on heresies is written with great tact. I certainly can't say the same for Mr. [GASTON] BACHELARD's "LAUTREAMONT", which is pure rubbish and a sad laugh. It's a pity that such a nasty pamphlet has come into being. Is it not in your power to grace me with an issue of "Cahiers d'art" that interests me strictly in everything that concerns [ANDRE] MASSON, a long snail's tail thrown over the rest? [Fascicule no. 5-10 of Cahiers d'art, published in 1939 and featuring a contribution by Pierre Mabille, is illustrated with some fifteen drawings by the painter and engraver André Masson]. I'm planning to visit Paris one day soon (around Saturday or Sunday). THE ANTHOLOGY OF THE MARVELOUS WOULD BE BEAUTIFUL TO READ HERE IN THIS MODERNIZED SWEDENBORGIAN LANDSCAPE. See you soon, I hope, my dear Pierre, from the bottom of my heart... " In 1940, Pierre Mabille published Le Miroir du merveilleux, illustrated with drawings by Yves Tanguy and André Masson.
