Description

BAUDELAIRE (Charles). Autograph letter signed "Ch. Baudelaire" to Antoine-Jean-Marie Arondel. One p. in-8; small tear with damage to one word, small marginal cracks. "I urge you, if you want to see my marvelous Chinese, to get there early, for if you wanted to dodge the previous drama, you might well not find seats, - the paper I leave you as a simple note from the director, and not implying the withholding of numbered seats. I had totally forgotten that today and tomorrow I have to dine with the same person, the head of administration of Le Siècle, - and you know how interested I am in tormenting him. I'm going to write you a letter, starting this evening, in which I'll explain very clearly what I can do, what I want, - the possible, - and the impossible -, then you'll write to give me an appointment to see your Perducet [wine merchant Nicolas Perducet] - whom I absolutely must triumph over - with your help. All yours, I assure you..." A DOUBT ART MERCHANT, ANTOINE-JEAN-MARIE ARONDEL, had sold paintings and lent money to Charles Baudelaire, who, realizing he had been duped, never repaid his debt, despite Arondel's use of an intermediary to collect debts. It was only after the death of Baudelaire and his mother that the notary Narcisse Ancelle, in charge of their affairs, paid part of the sum in full.
