HENRI IV. Bill signed "Henry", countersigned by his secretary Martin Ruzé de Beaulieu, addressed to Fabien de Roybours. "Au camp devant Rouen", December 13, 1591. One p. in-8 square oblong, address on spine; marginal tears due to opening without affecting text. "I am sending the sr. de Réau to you to let you hear from me something infinitely important to the good of my afferes service. I beg you to believe him as I do myself, and God the Creator, may he have you... in his holy and worthy care...". Fabien de ROYBOURS (sometimes spelled Rebours or Roybous) was then colonel of a regiment of lansquenets in the German army of the Prince of Anhalt in the service of France. - In the service of Henri IV even before his accession to the French throne, Antoine de Moret de REAU carried out numerous diplomatic missions, notably in Germany and England. HENRI IV AT THE CONQUEST OF HIS KINGDOM: Having become king in 1589 following the assassination of Henri III, Henri IV had to fight against the Ligueurs to retake Paris and the provinces north of the Loire, with each side seeking to swell its armies with French and foreign troops: thus, Henri IV, aided by German and Dutch forces, strove to retake Rouen from the Ligue supported by Spanish troops.
