HENRI IV (Henri de Bourbon, future). Signed "Henry", countersigned by his secretary Guillaume Arthuys. At the camp in front of Beauvoir-sur-Mer [in present-day Vendée], October 7, 1588. One p. folio, wax seal under paper bearing the arms of the Kingdom of Navarre. Safe-conduct granted to Vendéen gentleman Louis Foucher de Brandeau: "To all governors, capp[itai]nes, chief conductors of men of war, both mounted and foot, mayors, consulz eschevins de villes, m[aistr]es gardes de portz, pontz, passages aultres qu'il appartiendra, nous vous mandons expressement enjoingnons que par chascun de voz pouvoirs, vous laissez librement seurement passer repasser le sr Du Brandeau.... coming to Poictou for his business during a period of three months, without any arrest, displeasure or impediment being made, placed or given to him, but rather to give him all the favour and assistance he may require, with the proviso that he will not commit any hostile act or do anything prejudicial to our party...". DOCUMENT SIGNED DURING THE EIGHTH RELIGION WAR when, as King of Navarre and leader of the Protestant party, the future Henry IV was conducting operations against the Duke of Nevers (who was then fighting in the service of Henry III) while laying siege to the castle of Beauvoir-sur-Mer held by Jean de Mazoyer de Villeserin, head of the guards of the Duke of Mercœur, one of the leaders of the League.
