PISSARRO (Camille). Letter signed to his wife Julie Vellay. Hôtel Continental, Le Havre, August 20, 1903. One p. 1/3 in-8. In a delicate financial situation, Camille Pissarro had accepted collector Pieter Van de Velde's invitation to come to Le Havre to paint a series of views of the port, which was undergoing major changes at the time. The artist died a few weeks later in November 1903. " ... The weather here is also dreadful, with sunshine here and there. All the same, I've done a lot of work. The museum's buying committee offered to take a canvas of 15 at 2,500 fcs, or two at 4,000 each. I've accepted these prices, but there's nothing definite yet. Mr Van de Velde is due to bring me an amateur today or tomorrow. I hope to make a better deal, as these paintings seem to be very successful and are of great interest to the people of Le Havre because of the motifs that are due to disappear due to the construction of the new port... Mr. Van de Velde has been most charming to me, full of thoughtfulness. He is still in the country with his family, I went there, it's a quarter of an hour from here..."
