Description

MATISSE (Henri). Autograph letter signed to art critic Louis Vauxcelles. COLLIOURE, June 22, 1905. 2 pp. in-8; some cracks at folds. "Mr. Pierrefort [Parisian lithographer and gallery owner] told me that you were very interested in the TABLEAU DE FLEURS THAT I HAVE EXHIBITED at his place and that you must have mentioned it in the "Gil Blas" 8 or 10 days ago. I would like to thank you again for your great interest in my work, and as I am very anxious to know your criticism, finding myself in a hole where we can only get La Dépêche from Toulouse and L'Indépendant from Perpignan,... I have therefore come to ask you to send me the issue of Gil Blas containing your assessment of the Pierrefort exhibition. The country where I'm staying until September, although devoid of Parisian newspapers, is nevertheless very beautiful and has remained unchanged or almost unchanged for a hundred years; I'm doing a lot of work there (drawings, watercolors, painting) and I hope to bring back some pretty good stuff...". CELEBRATED FOR HAVING ORIGINATED THE EXPRESSIONS "FAUVISME" AND "CUBISME", LOUIS VAUXCELLES (1870-1943), born Louis Mayer, was an important art critic.
