Souvenirs of Commandant Honoré de VILLARD (1854-1915) Set of fourteen collections of Polytechnique courses in the name of Monsieur de VILLARD for the years 1884 to 1886. Red leather spines marked in gold (wear). 31 x 25 cm. Physics, Chemistry, Mechanics, Astronomy, Analysis, Military, etc. Includes Villard's limited student leave. Biography: Born into a Swiss family from the canton of Fribourg, he was the son of Edouard Laurent Victorin de Leschenault du Villard and continued the family tradition of the profession of arms and royalism. Educated at the minor seminary in Largentière, then at the lycée in Marseille, he was accepted at the École polytechnique in November 1884. He graduated as a second lieutenant in October 1886 and became lieutenant in the 6th foot artillery regiment (October 1888), then captain in the 2nd artillery regiment in Grenoble (April 1895). In April 1896, he was appointed to the Grenoble artillery command. In the meantime, he was an ordinance officer (November 1892-June 1893 and 1897). He went into action on August 2, 1914, commanding the 2nd echelon of the 7th artillery corps, and fought in the Alsace and Marne campaigns. Assigned to the command group of a 75 mm gun, he died in a reconnaissance mission ahead of the lines in Champagne on September 25, 1915.
