LA RIBOISSIÈRE (J.-A. Baston de). P.S. to Marshal Soult. Passau, June 6, 1806. Title and 12 pp. ½ in-folio on bluish paper. Important report on the "project for the formation of a flotilla on the Danube", written at the request of Marshal Soult, head of the reserve of the Grande Armée. This fleet was to be used to monitor the Danube from Passau, but above all to transport troops and allow armed soldiers to cross the river with their equipment, including horses. The memorandum begins with a census of all the boats anchored on the river and the state of the construction sites. The general then goes on to give technical and practical details for the construction of bridges using these boats. Finally, the general advocates the creation of a flotilla, which has the advantage of being easily assembled and equipped, attracting less attention from the enemy, mentioning the practical organization, details of troop embarkation and disembarkation, navigation on the Danube, landing points, etc. A former officer in the La Fère regiment, where the young Bonaparte was stationed, La Riboisière (1759-1812) was promoted to general in 1803, and appointed artillery commander of the 4th Corps under Soult. During the battle of Austerlitz, he directed his guns on the frozen Menitz pond, where the Russian columns were located, and distinguished himself again at Jena, repelling several infantry charges. The Emperor made him a divisional officer at the start of the Polish campaign, commanding the artillery of the Imperial Guard.
