HISTORY - SAVOY Christine of (1606 - 1663) - Letter signed Letter signed, dated “Torino li 25 d’Agosto 1652” by the Duchess of Savoy as the consort of Duke Victor Amadeus I. She was the daughter of Henry IV of France and sister of Louis XIII. Following her husband's death in 1637, she acted as regent of Savoy between 1637 and 1648. Addressed to the Marquis of Villa: “…Gradiamo l’esatezza v.ra in avvisarci d’ogni cosa che pervenghi alla v.ra cognitione, circa gl’andamenti di d.a. Armata, poiché è … necessario che ne siamo puntualmente informata, affine di poter accudire da qui dove il bisogno lo richiede…”. The Battle of Crescentino was fought on April 24, 1652, during the Franco-Spanish War. The Savoyard army, led by the Count of Verrua, defeated the French army, led by the Count of Harcourt. Giacosa wrote the final polished version of the libretto for Giacomo Puccini's Manon Lescaut, which had been begun by Ruggero Leoncavallo, Marco Praga, Domenico Oliva, and Luigi Illica. He also wrote the librettos used by Puccini for “La bohème”, “Tosca” and “Madama Butterfly” in conjunction with Luigi Illica. (8 x 13 cm). - This item is under temporary import. A set of 67 ENGRAVED PLANCHES by Tasnière after drawings and paintings by Baroncelli, Mielle, Sacchetti, Demphinus and others, depicting the architecture of the royal palace of Venaria by Castellamonte, the gardens, superb hunting scenes and the paintings and frescoes preserved in the rooms of the residence. The text takes the form of a dialogue between Count Amedeo di Castellamonte, architect and first engineer to the Dukes of Savoy, and Bernini. A very rare first edition of this magnificent work, one of the finest works of Italian Baroque and hunting literature, and one of Piedmont's most valuable and sought-after books. The Royal Palace of Venaria (Italian: Reggia di Venaria Reale) is a former royal residence located in Venaria Reale, near Turin in Piedmont, northern Italy. It was one of the residences of the Savoy royal family. It is one of the largest royal residences in the world, comparable in size and structure to Versailles and Caserta. The Palace was designed and built from 1675 by the architect Amedeo di Castellamonte, at the request of Duke Charles-Emmanuel II, who wanted a pied-à-terre for his hunting parties in the mountains north of Turin. The name of the palace comes from the Latin, Venatio Regia, meaning Royal Hunt. One damaged double plate cut in two (view of the square). Large folding plans torn and detached with cuts at folds. Rousseurs. A few tears but not missing. Very rare to find complete as here. A copy in need of general restoration.
