Description

[Horses]. Ferraro, Pirro Antonio and Giovanni Battista Ferraro. Cavallo frenato. Venice, heirs of Giovanni Battista Combi, 1653 (1620). In 2nd (319 x 224 mm); 2 parts in 1 volume; [2], 118, [2]; 256 pp. Engraved vignette on title-page of first part, typographical mark on title-page of second part, numerous woodcuts in text, mostly full-page, depicting mostly ancient and modern types of bits and bridles (tear to M1 paper; browning). Coeval full vellum binding with double gold border, central fleuron and in corners at plates, gold friezes at spine, manuscript title (inner hinge loose, lack at side of rear plate). Exemplar in handsome binding of this celebrated work, devoting itself in the first four books to the breeds of horses and the best way to breed them, to the discipline of horses, to preservative and curative medicine, and finally to surgery, and in the other four books mainly to bridles and bits. Specimen with the variant of "Francesco Prati, 1620" in the colophon, considering that the 1620 and 1653 editions, despite being printed by two different publishers, have the same marking and imprint for the second part.
