Null Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. Christ heals the sick, or the 100 florins. …
Description

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. Christ heals the sick, or the 100 florins. c. 1649. Etching, burin and drypoint on virgin paper, second state, Bartsch 074 (restoration at top of shade.) 299 x 414 mm. Lot accompanied by certificate of authenticity signed by Maurizio Marini and a document signed by Massimo Ripostai attesting to its provenance from the proven collection of Jean Marie Drot, former director of the French Academy in Rome. In this famous engraving, Rembrandt brings together several episodes from the life of Jesus taken from the Gospel of Matthew, juxtaposing the theme of healing with that of the purity of the soul. For its execution, the artist used acid etching, or etching, along with direct etching done with the burin and drypoint, thus achieving the deep blacks contrasted with the divine light obtained with the white of the paper. The etching is commonly known as "The Hundred Florin Print" probably in reference to the selling price. Many sources also report the anecdote that Rembrandt, wanting to buy prints by Marcantonio Raimondi of the same value, bartered them for a copy of this print.
