Description

Boccaccio, Giovanni. The Decameron novamente stampato con tre novelle agiunte. Venice, Bernardino de Viano de Lexona, 1525. In 2nd (290 x 200 mm); [4], 128 papers. Title in woodcut border, large woodcut at head of each day, in the text, paginated in two columns, 82 narrative woodcuts, some of them with character legends (delicate restorations to margin of first and last papers.) 19th-century English binding signed by Leighton in red morocco with dry and gold decorations, nailing à dentelles, gilt edges. Ex libris. Beautiful illustrated edition of the Decameron, textually executed over Gregori's 1516 edition. The iconographic apparatus is exemplified, as far as the large headpieces are concerned, on the 1492 edition of de' Gregori, while the narrative woods are mostly derived from that of 1510 by Bartolomeo de Zanni. Three "spicciolate" mock novellas are read in the appendix: Bonaccorso di Lapo Giovanni, Bianco Alfani and Grasso Legnaiolo.
