In addition to Western ships in Whampoa Bay, the view is taken from Dane Island (at the entrance to the Pearl River, with the Pazhou pagoda in the center). Here, the European ships are three-masted sailing ships modelled on those used by Dumont d'Urville (l'Astrolabe). This view is typical of the Anglo-Chinese schools of the 19th century (China Trade Paintings) and is like a snapshot of that era.
