Description

WOVEN BOOK OF HOURS WOVEN PRAYER BOOK based on manuscript illuminations from the 14th to 16th centuries. Lyon, Roux, 1886. In-8 square, blue-gray morocco, mute five-rib spine, double gilt fillet on edges, lemon morocco lining with filleted border and small roulette, blue moiré silk endpapers, gilt head and bottom, green-brown morocco case lined with white silk satin (KAUFFMANN-PETIT). A rare work, woven in very small numbers, with typefaces and ornaments entirely woven in black on a Jacquard loom, on a silver silk background. All 50 pages of text are decorated with large floral borders and ornate initials, four of which feature reproductions of four large miniatures. Originally designed by the manufacturer Henry in Lyon for the Jubilee of Leo XIII. The texts and drawings were designed by Reverend Father Hervier. According to Paul Marais, "The book is woven on a Jacquard silk loom; the fabric is made of very fine silk, remarkably tight, with 400 weft passes per inch [...]. It took more than two years to complete this prayer book". The range of tones, from pearl gray to deep black, is so varied that the text is perfectly legible and the illustrations and borders are of remarkable finish and purity of design. An exceptional book in its execution, whose "programming" is the forerunner of the computer. Reference: Vicaire V, 342; Marais, in bulletin du bibliophile, 1889 p. 163-66
