He began painting at an early age. Maurice Utrillo is best known for his views of Montmartre, a neighborhood where he met Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani and Marc Chagall. His works met with great success, particularly those of the White Period. NOTICE Maurice Utrillo's subtle color palette and realistic depiction of the streets, buildings and people of Montmartre made him one of the most renowned artists of his time. He was acclaimed for his ability to capture the melancholy, timeless atmosphere of Montmartre, particularly through his depictions of old houses, lively cafés and picturesque alleyways, as in our painting. This painting is part of the "White Period" from 1909 to 1914, during which Maurice Utrillo produced a series of paintings characterized by scenes of Montmartre dominated by white and gray tones. During this period, he used plaster mixed with paint to create a rough, thick texture on the canvas, reinforcing the impression of luminosity in his canvases.
