Null [PROVENANCE] KIMBER Isaac - Life of Olivier Cromwell
 A la Haye chez Jacob…
Description

[PROVENANCE] KIMBER Isaac - Life of Olivier Cromwell A la Haye chez Jacob de Jongh, 1725 - First edition of the French translation of this Anglo-Saxon work devoted to the great English soldier and politician who inspired so many 19th-century writers. Two very handsome, complete volumes bound in later half calf bindings with corners and romantic irons. Very good condition, some rubbing. Some foxing, but not serious, and a few traces of marginal wetness on a few pages of the second volume. In-8, 327pp, 254pp + table 42pp. Provenance: Very rare copies from the library of Benjamin Constant with his bookplate on the spine of each volume, this one very similar to that of his ancestor, captioned "Constant de Rebecque". There is also a fine pen-and-ink bookplate on the title page of each volume, leaving no doubt as to its provenance. Copies from the library of this great man of letters and state are particularly rare. The presence of this work in his library is hardly surprising, given the importance of Victor Hugo's play of the same name, published 3 years before Benjamin Constant's death.
