[MARINE] Gustave Adolphe de DURANTI de LIRONCOURT - Instruction élémentaire et raisonnée sur la construction pratique des vaisseaux en forme de dictionnaire Published by J.B.G. Musier fils in Paris, 1771 - Rare first edition of this highly interesting marine work. In his foreword, the author explains how important it is for every sailor to know the various parts used in shipbuilding, and their properties, among other things. His work is thus established as a very detailed dictionary of terms designating the parts of a vessel and their functions. Bound in full calf with some rubbing and rather skilful restorations, notably at the head, tail and corners. Waxing and rubbing not serious. Fairly good condition. Smooth spine with red morocco title-piece. Complete with 2 folding tables on the "dimensions & proportions of the masting & span of the three ordinary ranks of vessels" and "Dimensions & proportions of the ports of vessels of all ranks". A work of great interest for the study of naval construction in the 18th century. In-8, (32p) 271p Provenance: Stamp "Jean .... (faded), Capitaine au long cours" on title page.
