Description

[CORRESPONDANCES MANUSCRITES] [ENGRAVINGS AND MISCELLANEOUS] Very important set of papers and documents, including 3 interesting handwritten letters, signed by Edmond Picard to Félicien Rops, two of them in envelopes addressed to Félicien Rops at 17 rue Monnier, Paris, stamped and sealed. -1 letter on 2 single-page spreads -2 letters each on two black-framed double pages Exciting correspondence between one of Rops' great collectors and the artist, some excerpts "After a month, I lived among things that came out of your fingers". "Bonvoisin has, in fact, sent me an almost complete collection of your Diaboliques? And [...] other etchings and lithographs. [...] I have studied and analyzed all this [...] I have talked so much about it...". Letters dated April 28, 1878 and June 8, 1878 and January 8, 1881 [Attached] A fine set of engravings and miscellany: 3 double-page blanks on laid paper with engraved vignette in etching, in medallion, made by Félicien Rops for the Maison Duluc, at the address 19 rue de Grammont in Paris A small free leaf with an etched vignette in medallion, also produced by Félicien Rops for the Maison Duluc, at the same address but with a completely different typography and design. An etching by Félicien Rops, for Jean Brouette featuring two vignettes, on a fine page printed on watermarked paper. An etching of Pan playing the flute to a magpie, printed on Japon, cut paper, one piece only Large set of press clippings sent by l'Argus de la pressé (founded in 1879) to 14 Rue Drouot in Paris, and certainly intended for Léontine Duluc (Madame F. Rops), who shared her life with Félicien Rops. Some of these clippings are still in their envelopes, addressed to La Demi-Lune in Essonnes, and the documents as a whole suggest that they were intended for Léontine rather than her daughter. These press clippings refer to a large proportion of the articles devoted to Félicien Rops' work that appeared in the press, copies of La vie populaire of 1891 N°75 Thursday September 17, 1891 devoted to Félicien Rops (contemporary portraits), issues of Gil Blas, l'Art Moderne, l'évènement, l'indépendance, la réforme, le figaro, la plume etc. all relating to Félicien Rops and his work: a small box of miscellaneous documents and papers. A very beautiful stamped and sealed large-format postcard (dimensions: ...) from Nürnberg dated 1900 and signed in pen by Eugène Demolder "Mille embrassades de nous deux à vous tous, Nurenberg - Jeudi - Eugène Demolder" intended for Madame Rops at La Demi-Lune, Essonnes. Probably addressed to Léontine Duluc (1847-1915), by her daughter Claire Duluc (from her union with Félicien Rops) and her stepson Eugène Demolder, Claire's companion. Set of four small sketch-studies, three in pencil and one in pen, unsigned, of Félicien Rops' entourage, one representing a caricatured portrait-charge (trace of mention in pen not deciphered). An advertising menu with dishes illustrated in color for the Guimorais shellfish beach, La Guimorais was owned by Félicien Rops not far from Saint Malo. This menu recounts the history and qualities of the place, with two beautiful engraved compositions opening and closing the text. Etched header, signed with the monogram A.P. (entourage de Rops?) on a blank double page printed on watermarked Hollande Van Gelder paper (dimensions). A double-page advertising menu (first page only printed) illustrated by "a Belgian draftsman living in Paris, Emile-Antoine Coulon" (a pupil of Rops), dated 1894, for La société française de bienfaisance de Bruxelles on the occasion of the Christmas holidays, copy dedicated to Monsieur Félicien Rops "Hommage respectueux du dessinateur, Paris, 1895" in pen, dimensions Provenance: These documents come from a large collection of papers, letters, manuscripts and other items found in the half-moon house where the artist lived for many years with his two dressmaker sisters, Léontine and Aurélie Duluc.
